Tick, Tick…Boom! Makes its Way to TU
Johnathan Larson’s autobiographical musical, Tick, Tick…Boom!, is coming to Tiffin starting March 21st. The TiffinArts program is working to bring the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer’s work to life.
Tick, Tick…Boom! will include fourteen songs and showcase five actors. According to Justin DeLong, the director of this year’s production, Tick, Tick... Boom! takes you on the playwright/composer's journey that eventually led to the Broadway blockbuster RENT.
The musical jumps in and does none other than explain how Jon’s world is crumbling. Jon’s girlfriend is dying to get married and move away from the city, while his best friend is bringing in the big bucks on Madison Avenue, but he is still working as a waiter and trying to make his musical a reality. The compelling story is set in 1990 and is presented as a rock musical. It features appealing melodies and a one-of-a-kind blend of musical theatre styles.
The musical is sure to be a crowd-pleaser, giving audiences the chance to embrace the idea of holding onto their dreams despite the challenges they may face in life.
According to DeLong, “If you are looking to learn more about the show before attending, Netflix has a great film adaptation that stars Andrew Garfield.” This adaption includes many key themes and is sure to prepare you for the show.
Tick, Tick…Boom! will have six performances and will feature 2 casts. The varying casts will work to shed light on the story in different ways. The music and themes will remain the same, but the students will be able to add their own flair. In an interview with DeLong, he mentioned the following: "It has been wonderful to work with the casts as they find their own interpretation of the material. Everyone has approached the subject matter with the appropriate level of respect when needed, or with humor and levity when that is called for. They have been working hard and making smart acting choices, and I look forward to sharing their work with our audiences."
